The HAcademy is a place for people to have fun and be funny. You need no previous experience to join, just a love of comedy. The number one thing we do is have a good time. We’ll generate ideas, come up with material, and watch comedy clips to find out what makes them tick. You can make songs, sketches, stories, stand-up, whatever you want! The last class is always “show and tell” where everyone who wants to shares what they’ve come up with.
ABOUT ME: I’m Trevor Strong, a member of the comedy group The Arrogant Worms who’ve sold over 200 000 albums, toured relentlessly, and had a song played on the space shuttle Endeavour. I’ve also written for radio (The Irrelevant Show), movies (Stupidity), and teach a variety of creative things. I am overeducated (I have a PhD in Education). I like cats.

More About the Courses
What is a typical class?
We always start by talking about what “funny” things people have noticed over the course of the week–one of the best ways to get comedic material is to simply pay attention to all the strange things happening in the world around you. Then we watch a short comedy video suggested by someone in the class and then discuss how it worked. What was the set-up? Where did the laughs come and why? How was a comedic situation established? After that we then do some writing exercises to come up with funny ideas of our own, which people are encouraged to share and discuss.
Do I need any experience?
No! Everyone already has experience with comedy. You’ve seen it all your life, and you’ve probably even made the occasional funny remark. Everything is approached with a try it first and explain it later.
What style of comedy can I do?
You can do any style you want. The focus is coming up with ideas and then expanding on them. The ideas can be applied to whatever form of comedy you like: songs, sketches, stand-up, stories. We will also examine the differences of these approaches and how it shapes how you present and organize your material.
Can I take the course more than once?
Absolutely. I’ve had some students who have taken multiple times (some of them over 10!). I’m always coming up with new writing exercises and because this is a learn by doing approach the classes are never the same twice. There is always the opportunity to learn a bit more and to come up with new ideas!
What’s your experience?
I’ve been with the music/comedy group, The Arrogant Worms, for over 30 years. I’ve written for radio (most recently The Irrelevant Show), and also published three comedy books. I’ve now taught these courses over twenty times. I’m also a certified teacher and researched humour as part of my Maters’ of Education.
